Our New Family Theme Song

I have these funny daughters. Funny and smart and talented, just like I ordered from the "Offspring {reverse R} Us" catalog. Admittedly, they came with the hormonal insanity package, but I'm pretty sure that's standard equipment on most teenagers.

For years, we've had FHE on Sundays, and tonight my daughter Corinne was asked by her father to prepare a lesson on Doctrine and Covenants 88:123-124. We're only two weeks into summer vacation and my husband is already pulling out the big guns in his battle against the ridiculous hours the kids are keeping, as well as the general sluggishness with which they do just about everything except destroy the kitchen. That particular endeavor is pursued with almost religious fervor and the zeal of the true believer.

Anyway, the scripture on which Cori's lesson was based goes like this:

"See that ye love one another; cease to be covetous; learn to impart one to another as the gospel requires. Cease to be idle; cease to be unclean; cease to find fault one with another; cease to sleep longer than is needful; retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated."

So Cori went to the other room to prepare her lesson, and after 45 minutes or so invited her sister Vanessa out to the patio, where they began singing. I couldn't really hear the words but I wasn't paying much attention because singing is just this thing that happens all the time around here. I can't tell you how often I've had to go outside at eleven p.m. and tell my kids, "The neighbors have been serenaded enough. As we speak they're calling the cops, so it's probably time to wrap up the concert." I know that sounds cute and kinda seminary movie-ish, but by that time of night it's just embarrassing.

They sing in the car, in the pool, while bickering, when they have friends over, after the friends have left in annoyance that no actual conversation is happening and that life at this house is just one long scene from "The Von Trapps Settle in Suburbia" -- any time. Seriously. It's pathological.

However, I digress.

Cori introduced the lesson and led a discussion on the subject of "Why it's a good idea to go to bed early and get up early," an activity which, given the habits of the participants, bordered on thrust-down-to-hell hypocrisy. But it was good to take stock, examine their individual routines, and apologize to their dad for limiting his sleep time to the nineteen minutes between when they finally crash and when his alarm goes off.

After the lesson, the girls announced they had a special musical number, the link to which is found below. Corinne, 16 and sporting a long ponytail, wrote the words and came up with the tune. Vanessa, 19 and wearing glasses, figured out all the harmonies.

They did this in less than an hour, the talented little boogs! Enjoy!

They would like me to tell you that they usually look much more made up and fabulously attractive than this. And I would appreciate it if you would ignore the hamper full of laundry that is situated smack dab between the two performers. I have absolutely no idea how it got there. None.

Cease To Be Idle

Once there was a girl named Suzy Q
She was always searching
For something to do
But she always lazed about
At her family she would shout
And it made them all pretty mad

One time it was morning and her daddy said
Suzy Q I think you should get out of bed
But she said no, I won’t go
And he said come and I will show you
‘Bout a scripture I just read

Chorus:
It says to love one another
Cease to be covetous
Learn to impart the gospel

You have to cease to be idle
Cease to be unclean
And cease to find fault in each other

And while sleeping can be fun
And sleeping can be great
You should wake up early
And not go to bed late

And if you do these things
I promise you will find
That you wont be weary and
Have invigorated mind….

Then you can love one another
Cease to be covetous
Learn to impart the gospel

Then you can cease to be idle
Cease to be unclean
And cease to find fault in each other

Verse 2:
So little Suzy Q, she got out of bed
She brushed her little teeths and to her daddy said
My leaf is overturned
My bad habits I have burned
And now I’m feeling pretty good

And with the knowledge I have gained
I will never be the same
And of my past I am ashamed….

And she said
“With this new way of life, I could be president!”…

She learned to love one another
Ceased to be covetous
Learned to impart the gospel

She had ceased to be idle
Ceased to be unclean
And ceased to find fault in each other
Cease to find fault in each other
Ceeease to find faaaault in eachooootheeeeer

Ba du dum. Yeah!

I wanna hang out with you guys.

My, how things change, because there is not much I wouldn't give up to get my kids to sleep longer in the morning.

(And can I also say how familiar it all sounds? The random singing, the harmonizing together, the general funness in spite of the rough parts of being in a family together? It's wonderful. I also think it's rare. So good job.)

btw...you all make it so hard to be part of this family...when I have no talent at ALL and I'm surrounded by nothing but amazing, funny, wonderful talent! Really, it’s not fair!

I demand to be invited over to FHE immediately! And Baby G is bopping around to their song right now, doing baby sign language for "more" every time the song ends.

K, it's a miracle I'm related to those girls. Yes, I can plunk out a few songs on the piano. Yes, I can carry a tune but OH MY GOSH!!!! They are truly gifted! Just like their mama!

And I'm sorry, but was that Jen up there saying she has no talent? JEN??? The "Best Female Clogger in the Western United States"? The one that was on Hee-Haw several times? The one whose clogging teams are always champions? The one that can move her feet so fast they practically turn the dance floor into dust? THAT Jen?

Nice try, Jen. You're amazingly talented!!!

While I was listening to it my boys came running in to see what "that cool song" was. :-)

Let me know when they're first CD comes out; I'll buy one!

I logged back on to show this to the kids. Our 10-year-old was playing in the background, and said, "Hey, that's just like that scripture we read!" (Really? You were paying attention?" ) and our 14-year-old daughter said, "They have such good voices! Wow. They seem like such fun girls." Too bad you live in a whole other STATE! (Even though when I read your profile about living in the ONE city you swore you'd never live in, my first thought was, "Hey, she lives in PROVO too?!?) Haha...

So there you go...
